PDT - Photodynamic Therapy

PDT stands for Photodynamic Therapy.

Photodynamic Therapy is a major step forward in the treatment of superficial skin cancers, achieving excellent cosmetic outcomes with relatively few side effects. For many patients, PDT surpasses current therapies as first line treatment for superficial skin cancers and is also used for photo rejuvenation of sun damaged skin, as well as for skin conditions such as Acne and Rosacea.

METVIX PDT is an effective treatment for some non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) as well as certain types of pre-cancerous lesions such as solar keratoses (AKs) and BCCs. Metvix PDT uses a different approach to treatment of these lesions in comparison to conventional treatments. It is a simple, non-invasive treatment that consists of the application of Metvix cream to the lesion(s) followed by its exposure to light from the specifically designed Aktilite lamp. The cells in the lesion absorb the active ingredient form the Metvix cream. When exposed to light from the Aktilite lamp, a chemical reaction occurs which destroys only the lesion, minimising side effects and the potential for scarring.

After your treatment, it is advisable to keep the treated area clean. It is also recommended to protect the treated skin from direct sun for a couple of days.
