Leg Vein SclerotherapyVaricose and Spider Veins can be treated by Sclerotherapy-a process whereby an irritant solution or sclerosant is injected into the veins followed by compression of the legs by a bandage or stocking. This causes the vein to sclerose and eventually obliterate over a period of 2-3 months. At the initial consultation, patients are reviewed and a treatment plan is formulated. Subsequent treatment sessions average20 -30 minutes and usually 1-3 sessions are required to complete the treatment depending upon the number of veins present. The injection sites are covered with small gauze dressings and a supportive stocking or bandage worn for 2-3 days. However in some cases, such as around the foot or ankle or when treating Varicose Veins, a longer period for the compression stocking is required. Patients can perform normal activities after the treatment and exercise such as walking, is in fact encouraged. The treatment usually achieves a 70-90 % clearance of the veins and the final result is not obtained for 2-3 months after treatment. |
