Veins are necessary blood vessels that mostly carry blood back to the lungs and heart. However some veins create pain or cosmetic issues and look unsightly on areas such as legs. Varicose veins are most common which visibly bulge and twist under the skin surface. When the vein valves are not working properly the blood flows in the wrong direction and "pools" which causes symptoms including a sensation of leg heaviness, throbbing, pain and swelling. Varicose veins may be genetic and more prone in pregnant women or obesity.

Spider veins are small and closer to the skin surface. The fine veins can be red or blue and look like spider-webs mainly found on the legs but also on the face. Influences such as hormonal changes, injuries or sun exposure can cause spider veins. Wearing supportive garments such as compression stockings can assist with prevention especially if you have a job which requires a lot of time on your feet.
